Sam's Birthday!!!
Today, we left Naples and boarded an express train to Florence. The weather was a little rainy, however we were all excited to be in a new part of Italy. We went for a walk and started putting our new understanding of the Italian language to use. Some of us were even brave enough to ask the locals for directions. We arrived in Florence around midday and checked into our four star motel. We were greeted by our friendly tour guide Francesca who lifted our spirits despite the rain. Francesca took us to the Duomo Santa Maria Del Fiore which is made of marble and we were all amazed at the frescos which adorned the walls. Some of us climbed to the top (which involved over four hundred stairs) and took in one of the highest vantage points of the city- which allowed for some excellent photo opportunities. The main city square was beautiful and the Golden Gates (made of 24 c pure gold) impressed everyone. The best part of the tour was the statues in Signora Square of Hercules and other characters from mythology.
After our tour ended, we visited the markets where some of us picked up leather goods at bargain prices- we are getting good at haggling.
Today was also a very important day as Sam celebrated his eighteenth birthday. He was impressed by his package from home (thanks mum and dad) and we gave him a special card and cake. Luke also gave him an interesting present which might make it home.
Tomorrow we are headed to the Science Museum and the Academy of Fine Arts where we will get to finally see the statue of David.
